about

by John Coltrane arranged Paul Cutlan

This is an example of the gentler side of John Coltrane’s output, recorded by his quartet in 1963. It is a ballad without a regular pulse. The shimmering piano chords on the original recording are realised here by tremolo strings and harmonics. As well as reflecting my ongoing passion for Coltrane’s music, I’ve always felt this melody suits the voice of the bass clarinet beautifully. Oliver Miller’s cello tenderly intones the melody in the interludes.
